The ghost of Mother's Day past

My favourite tea mug

My first most memorable Mother's Day would have been three years ago when my estranged ex took the boys out to Winners so they could get me a present. They came back with a pretty flower candle, some bubble gum lip gloss, and this mug, along with a touching card they picked out themselves. I used up the lip gloss and found the candle a home on my dressing table where it remains today...but I have to say this mug has a special place in my heart. It is virtually the only mug I will drink my tea from. I use it all the time. It is my favourite mug.

My second most memorable Mother's Day was last year, when my oldest son made breakfast in bed for me. An english muffin and a glass of milk. He came into my room with it all set out on a cookie sheet, because I don't own a tray. It was very sweet of him, and I ate up every last bite.

Sadly, this Mother's Day went by like any other day of the year. I didn't have the kids this weekend, and as my boys are getting older and busying themselves with all the things they have going on nowadays, they didn't even bother to call me.

Of course I am very hurt, but I wonder if I am overreacting. I wouldn't expect their father, who never gave a damn about me when we were married, to remind them to give me a call. I would have hoped that they might be missing me or just even thinking about me for a microsecond, and want to give me a call to wish me a happy Mother's Day. I guess I'm just not that important to them right now.

Instead I spent the day working in the yard and filling three huge garden bags full of weeds. I got the backyard lawn mowed and my kitchen cleaned. As a treat to myself I had a nice soak in the tub afterwards and did my toes. My garden is looking great and I can't wait to get some flowers planted in it.

But I would have killed for that phone call...
